ENGLISH winger Joe Burgess has admitted to rejecting the opportunity to remain in the NRL with the Rabbitohs in favour of returning home to play for Wigan.
Burgess, arrived in Australia early last year after taking up a two-year deal with the Roosters but managed just four appearances before switching to Souths midway through the season.
The 22-year-old seemingly impressed during his limited time at Redfern and according to him the club were hoping he would extend his stay in Australia.
“They wanted to keep hold of me,” Burgess told BBC Radio Manchester.
“I think I could easily have got out of the contract [with Wigan] but I couldn’t turn on my hometown like that.
“If it was any other team, and this sounds bad, I would have tried to fight it to stay there but I’m too loyal to Wigan.
“I don’t regret it as I can’t wait for this season and hopefully we’ll win something.”
The Super League season kicks on February 10.
