THE man Jarryd Hayne reckons throws better long passes than Andrew Johns has shed light on one of the reasons for his silky skills.
Titans half Kane Elgey, fighting fit after recovering fully from an ACL tear that cruelled his 2016 season, has revealed how it was Johns who fine-tuned his passing game in two training sessions he’ll never forget.
“Joey came to the club when I finished school and I did some training with him in the pre-season,” Elgey tells RLW.
“He only did two sessions with us but I’ve never forgotten them.
“I remember him teaching me how to position your feet when you’re passing and slowing your steps up at the line and not just being one tempo.
“I’ve built my game around my passing and Joey’s passing game was a big thing for him.”
Elgey is raring to go after being ready to play for almost three months.
The emergence of Ash Taylor and his link up alongside Tyrone Roberts means there’s no certainty that the 22-year-old will reclaim a starting role with the Gold Coast in 2017, but it’s not something he is expecting to come until he can show his worth.
“You don’t want to to expect too much because you can only be disappointed in the end,” he says.
“I’m not going to think I will start at six or seven. I’m just excited to help out the team any way I can.”
