Fittler backs Maloney in Origin audition

CITY coach Brad Fittler says Country five-eighth James Maloney will have a target on his back in the Origin game at Scully Park, Tamworth, on Sunday.

The then Sydney Roosters and now Cronulla Sharks No.6 starred for Country in their 34-22 win over City at Wagga last year and while the City-Country game is unlikely to have a major impact on NSW selections for the State of Origin series another big effort by Maloney would certainly help his cause.

“He’s going to have a target on his jersey,” Fittler says.

“He did a great job last year. He was the difference and every time you’re playing it’s an opportunity to impress, simple as that.”

The City team is not nearly as strong as it might have been, because of the unavailability of a number of players, and they will start outsiders against Country.

Fittler says his aim is to make sure the experience benefits those who do play for his team.

“I’ve found the players involved have always gone away with this experience and played better football,” he says.

“My focus has always been to bring the kids through.”
