Knights CEO Matt Gidley says the club is “well positioned” to bring Kalyn Ponga to Newcastle in 2017 if the Cowboys release the 18-year-old.
Speaking to media today, Gidley says the Knights would love to have Ponga at the club next season, but the Cowboys presently have no intention to release the prodigious teen early.
“I think it’s important that everyone realises that Kalyn is contracted to the Cowboys for 2017, and we need to respect that,” he says.
“But if the Cowboys do decide to change their position then we would certainly entertain having a conversation about bringing Kalyn here early.
“We’ve only just been able to announce the signing, so the Cowboys have indicated at this stage that they won’t entertain releasing him early so we’ll respect that. But things may change and we’re well positioned to bring Kalyn if they change their position.”
Gidley says they identified Ponga as a recruitment target six months ago, and have locked him up for four years from 2018 so they can build the team around the exciting custodian.
“Fullback is arguably the most influential position on the field these days so it was important to us, given Kalyn’s only 18, to enter him into a long-term contract.”
