Ex-NRL hooker and all-round larrikin MARK RIDDELL opens up about weird gym sessions, superstitions and a pop music obsession.
What’s the funniest thing you ever saw at training?
I’ve seen plenty, but the best one for sure was at the Dragons. I was doing a gym session and few of my team-mates thought it would be funny to prance around in the gym in the nude with wigs on. I nearly dropped the bar on myself it was so hilarious (laughs).
Which player is the worst dancer you’ve seen?
Definitely ‘Timmo’ (Shaun Timmins). He’d have a few and try to bust a move but he couldn’t dance. Actually it looked like he could hardly stand.
What is the weirdest pre-game ritual you have seen?
I never took much notice of anyone else’s rituals because I was so into my own. I used to do the same undies thing and certain socks and boots on . . . but without fail I always had to pour a cup of water on my head in the tunnel as we ran onto the field.
Which actor would play you in a movie about your life and why?
I never thought I’d be asked that (laughs). And thinking about it now I can’t come up with a specific actor, but I will tell you he’d have to be funny, fat and balding . . . that’s me to a tee!
What is the most embarrassing CD you own/song on your iPod?
I didn’t mind a bit of music before a game but not like the boys do these days with the big headphones and such. But if you ask me now the most embarrassing song on my iPod . . . it’s Call Me Maybe by Carly Rae Jepsen. I don’t care though, I love that song!
Who was your most annoying team-mate and why?
It would have to be Mick Vella. That guy used to annoy the hell out of everyone and anyone. But he used to give it to Timana Tahu . . . and trust me that was always good value and hilarious. Mick was a different character, that’s for sure.
