TWO English clubs are set to check on the availability of Dragons playmaker Gareth Widdop for 2018.
Salford and another outfit, thought to be Hull FC, are aware he’s off-contract, and are preparing to see if they can lure him home next season.
A move would appear unlikely — Widdop turns just 28 this month — but Super League clubs do have the option of using a marquee player allowance to pay one star whatever amount they like, knowing only a portion counts on the salary cap limit.
Widdop is under immense pressure to lift his game this season after a less than stellar showing in 2016.
With Benji Marhsall being moved on by the club the playmaking responsibilities lay firmly on the shoulders of the Englishmen.
If he wants to remain in the NRL beyond his current contract he’ll certainly need to show his worth for the Red V this season.
