Canberra’s latest English recruit, Jordan Turner, says it was his former teammate at St Helens, Iosia Soliola, who convinced him to accept an offer to join the Raiders.
Soliola has been at Canberra for two seasons now and seen the Raiders become one of the most dangerous teams in the competition.
“Yeah, I spoke to Sia quite a bit before I came here and he’s somebody whose word I took because he’s an honest guy and he had nothing but good words to say about the place, the city and the players and coaching staff,” Turner says.
“So, yeah, Sia was a bit of an influence and I made the right decision.”
Turner, 27, is a utility who can play in various positions in the forwards or backs. He says he prefers playing in the halves or at centre, but is ready to have to try to force his way into the starting 13 via the bench.
“Maybe I might be able to get an interchange bench spot, that’s the sort of thing that Ricky (Stuart, the Canberra coach) talks about,” Turner says.
“I’ll be happy if I can make the squad for round one. If I can be in the 17 I’ll be a very happy man and I’ll be looking to cement a place in the 17 first and think about the starting line-up after that.”
